Eduardo Lillingston Joins Club Tijuana On Loan

January 13th, 2010

From: Chivas Jersey

Eduardo Lillingston will be taking his 8 goals (tops for Chivas USA in 2009) to Tijuana of the Mexican League on loan from Chivas USA and because of the move will be unavailable to Chivas USA until international transfer window opens on July 15.

Eduardo Lillingston will be joined on Club Tijuana, which currently resides in the second division of Mexican Soccer by former Chivas USA mid-fielder Panchito Mendoza who is on loan from Chivas de Guadalajara.

While Lillingston was the top scorer for Chivas USA in 2009 he lost some playing time due to his inability to play any semblance of defense. Lillingston is a pretty good scorer and a good guy to have come off the bench should you need a scoring punch late in the match but he’s not the legitimate consistent scoring threat that Chivas USA desperately needs. He proved that last year.

And while Maykel Galindo did start to look like his former self towards the end of the season, Chivas USA still needs to go out and get a top striker if the team ever hopes to become a post-season threat.

Five Big Questions For Chivas USA

December 3rd, 2009

From: MLS Net

With the 2009 season completed, here are the answers to some of the biggest questions surrounding Chivas USA as the club prepares for 2010.

WHAT DO CHIVAS USA NEED TO DO TO GO FARTHER IN THE MLS CUP PLAYOFFS?

While often a solid contender in the Western Conference, Chivas USA struggle to win big games. The team is 1-4-3 in playoff contests over the course of the last four years. If they are going to advance past the first round of the postseason in 2010, the Red-and-White must find a way to hit their best form for important matches.

WHAT WAS THE TEAM'S BEST MOMENT IN '09?

Chivas USA revealed their true character in the team's first playoff match with the LA Galaxy. Down 2-1 to their in-stadium rivals at halftime, the Red-and-White scored early in the second half and then proceeded to dominate the run of play for the next 40 minutes. The playoff series ultimately didn't go their way, but the first match really demonstrated that Chivas USA could match up with anybody in the league.

WHO SHOWED THE BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT OVER THE COURSE OF THE SEASON?

When Michael Lahoud arrived in Los Angeles in January, it was obvious that he was a rookie. He seemed timid in the attack and generally overwhelmed by the pace of the game. Eight months later, he was helping Chivas USA into the playoffs during a closing run that saw the team lose just two of its last eight games. He capped off his first pro season by earning a staring nod in both the Red-and-White's playoff matches against the Galaxy.

WHAT RESERVES ARE MOST READY TO CRACK THE STARTING LINEUP?

At just 20 years old, Chivas USA youth system product Gerson Mayén is still a young player, but after notching four assists in just 12 appearances this season, he is poised to become an important member of the squad next year. Numerous stints with the U-20 national team in 2009 will help his confidence as he continues to improve.

WHAT AREA OF THE TEAM NEEDS THE MOST IMPROVEMENT?

Without a doubt, Chivas USA must improve their attack. The team scored the lowest number of goals in the Western Conference this season, and hasn't netted more than twice in one game since Oct. 4, 2008. The defense has been solid, but the Red-and-White must get better at finding the back of the net.

Chivas USA Season Ending Post

November 25th, 2009

From: Chivas USA Jersey

The Chivas USA season was ended by their inner-city rival the Los Angeles Galaxy and the only reason Chivas was defeated was because they don't have the same quality players on the pitch as their rivals - most notably their stars Landon Donovan and David Beckham.

Chivas USA lacks a solid scoring punch and a consistent scorer that the team can look to in clutch situation down the stretch.

When the LA galaxy gets in trouble they look to get the ball to Beckham and Donovan because those guys are play makers and everybody on that team knows that.

Chivas USA doesn't have that and while they have a lot of good quality players they don't have any go-to guys that they can count on down the stretch.

Maicon Santos is not that guy and neither is Eduardo Lillingston as they found out real early in the season. Sacha Kljestan could be that guy someday but not anytime soon and while Maykel Galindo looked like he was returning to his true form down-the-stretch he's been injury prone and unreliable.

Chivas USA is in need of a big time scorer if it ever plans on doing more then getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Chivas USA Playoff Preview

November 8th, 2009

The best feet didn't exactly come forward in the first match.

In this one, they'd better.

The Galaxy and Chivas USA meet this afternoon with the season on the line for both clubs at Home Depot Center. The winner - and there will be one this time - advances to the Western Conference final.

The 2-2 tie in the first game, a home game for Chivas, was that high-scoring only because of wayward kicks that were hardly playoff worthy.

Afterward, Galaxy coach Bruce Arena couldn't help but look ahead.

"It creates a heck of a second game in this series," he said.

The Galaxy, the regular-season winner of the Western Conference, is seeking a third MLS Cup championship.

Chivas, in its fourth consecutive playoff appearance, is looking to get out of the first round for the first time. The Goats have won only once in their seven postseason encounters.

They know what's on the line.

"It means that you've got to leave everything on the field," Chivas midfielder Paulo Nagamura said. "From the first minute you've got to be prepared for a battle, you've got to be willing to give everything for your teammates.

"The team with less mistakes will probably win the game."

Which means they pretty much tied in that department in the opener, when Mike Magee and Landon Donovan of the Galaxy converted miscues and Chivas' Maykel Galindo took advantage of a lazy pass to score the tying goal.

Again today, Galindo could be the deciding factor. The defector from Cuba is now rounding into form after three abdominal operations in the past year, though he came on as a halftime substitute last week.

He might have earned the starting role alongside either Maicon Santos or Justin Braun for today's match.

"That's the real Galindo we know from a couple years ago," Chivas coach Preki said. "He still has it, and I know he still has it. Now is the time for him to bring it on."

Galindo, who had 12 goals and five assists in 2007, started only 15 games this season and scored four goals.

But he was the factor that helped Chivas hold a 6-3 shot advantage in the second half of Game 1.

"If we play like we did in the second half I like our chances," Chivas defender Ante Jazic said. "Maykel came in, he was a boost, and he changed the game for us."

But both Arena and Preki must be wary about their three allotted subs. If the game ends in a tie score after a 30-minute overtime, the winner will be determined by penalty kicks and only the players on the field at the end are eligible to take them.

"We have to be very aggressive in the second game," Galindo said. "They were very aggressive against us and hopefully we can take those three points in the next game."

The Galaxy, who would be at home if they advance to the Western final, have surprised even themselves with their remarkable turnaround. A year ago, they tied San Jose for the worst record in the league (8-13-9) and allowed 62 goals.

This year, they were a point away from the best record and allowed only 31 goals.

Chivas, which also allowed only 31 goals, arrives today with newly crowned Goalkeeper of the Year Zach Thornton as its backstop. But it was Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts who made two huge stops on Santos and Nagamura in the second half last week.

The most obvious tactical battle in the first game was the way Chivas opened the game, with midfielder Michael Lahoud shadowing Galaxy midfielder David Beckham, prompting Arena to have Beckham and midfielder Chris Birchall switch sides. Still, Beckham had a quiet day.

But tactics might play only a side role today, particularly if the game goes into an energy-sapping overtime.

"You can probably double the anticipation," Magee said. "It was a two-game series, now it's one."

One team could be only a foot away from advancing.
